Difference Between HPHT and CVD Diamonds – Few Interesting Facts

Are you looking for details on CVD vs HPHT diamonds? In that case, you need to know about some of the details with regards to these two types of lab made diamonds. When it comes to making HPHT diamonds; High Pressure and High Temperature is used; and for CVD diamonds, the method of Chemical Vapour Deposition is used.  In the following section of this article, you will be offered a few importance details pertaining to these two types of lab made diamonds, which would give you some ideas about their features, characteristics and other relevant aspects.

The Process of growing these two types of Diamonds

As mentioned, both CVD and HPHT are lab grown diamonds. Hence, they are produced through different types of chemical and mechanical processes. In this section, you will be offered a brief insight into some of them

  • HPHT: HPHT is the first mechanism to be invented for growing diamonds in the lab. In this method, the natural process of diamond formation is replicated. Here the diamond seed is placed in a medium of carbon, along with a crystal. Carbon is the main element when it comes to making of diamonds; whether naturally or at the lab. Extremely high pressure and temperature is applied; like natural diamond is formed under the core of the earth.  This ensures that the carbon gets deposited on the diamond seed and it starts taking the form, shape of a diamond with the features and characteristics.
  • CVD: The process of making CVD diamond also starts with a diamond seed. The seed is kept in a room, which contain mixture of hydrocarbon gas. Then hydrogen gas is pumped into the chamber and the heated to form plasma. This creates the perfect condition for the carbon to get deposited on the seed of the diamond. A process of ionisation starts, and gradually, the diamond seed starts to grow.

Apparently; both these processes appear to be quite similar. Lab grown diamonds have gained tremendous popularity ever since they have come into existence. CVD has contributed immensely towards the popularity of lab grown diamonds.  With the help of CVD, it became possible to grow colour less diamonds and at a price, which is surprisingly lower; due to the fact that very less amount of energy and heat was required.

Quality of HPHT and CVD

Usually, HPHT is associated with diamonds with a yellowish hue. It is the oldest mechanism to be used for making diamonds in the lab; and the fact that the technology hasn’t improved much over a period of time, the quality of the diamonds produced using this technology has not improved much.

It was the CVD method, which was first used to make colourless diamonds at a very low cost. CVD diamonds, ever since they came into existence, have become more popular due to their quality and comparatively low price.

These are some of the important aspects which you needed to know about CVD and HPHT diamonds. Looking to buy a ring with either of these diamonds? Have a look over the internet.
